IPR Pharmaceuticals and Puerto Rico
Our history
IPR Pharmaceuticals launched its Puerto Rico operations in 1986 with the establishment
of our first plant in Carolina. We quickly demonstrated our ability to excel in
this environment and in 1992 inaugurated the Guayama plant to manufacture the active
ingredients for some of the company's leading products.
In 1998, we acquired the Canóvanas facilities of the Chiron Corporation in order
to expand our capacity to manufacture, package and distribute medicines to patients
around the world. Once the permitting phase was completed, we began construction
of the manufacturing plant and support facilities and the site was officially inaugurated
in March 2004.
IPR Pharmaceuticals' total investment in our Canóvanas and Carolina plants now exceeds
$650 million.
Our products
The Canóvanas plant manufactures the cholesterol-reducing drug Crestor and Casodex,
used in the treatment of prostate cancer. In addition, the new plant handles the
packaging and distribution of all the other AstraZeneca products that are made in
Puerto Rico. The other products, which are manufactured in IPR's Carolina plant,
are the asthma medication Accolate; the beta-blockers Tenormin and Tenoretic; the
ACE inhibitors Zestril and Zestoretic; and Zomig, used in the treatment of migraines.
A strong commitment to Puerto Rico
Along the way, we have maintained a solid commitment to the preservation of the
environment and the wellbeing of the communities that surround us. In Canóvanas,
we designed the plant in a way that protects the surrounding beauty of the marshlands
for future generations, while in Guayama we have been active conservationists, preserving
a 10-acre habitat of rare silk cotton trees and other flora and fauna. We have shared
these marvelous gifts of nature with the community, conducting tours for schoolchildren
and other interested parties and opening the site to researchers.
A value-driven organization
We value the innovation, hard work, creativity, integrity, energy, leadership and
unbending commitment to quality that characterize our people. We encourage our people
to develop their individual talents and we build our operation on their strengths.
Their collective work brings outstanding results in every aspect of the operation.
After all, we are in the business of making life better for the human family.
